Magaluf: A Great Option for Cheap Family Holidays

Magaluf is renowned as a party destination for young people from Britain and the rest of Europe. Yet if you are looking for an affordable holiday to Spain with your family, you might also want to consider this great resort.

The main reason to come here is the wide variety of deals offered by package holiday companies. You can get a trip, inclusive of your flights and hotels, for far less than other resorts. So for cash-strapped families it is well worth coming here as you can still enjoy the beaches and the Mediterranean temperature at a much lower rate.

What wards many families off is Magaluf’s reputation as a party destination – this is certainly deserved, however, you can avoid all this by booking into the right hotel. If you find somewhere nice and quiet you and your family can relax there and avoid all the partiers. Somewhere like the Marina Torrenova Hotel is perfect as it has large, sprawling facilities and a nice atmosphere that will sit well with your kids.

Once you’ve found yourself a sanctuary, you will find that there are lots of good family friendly activities. You can try go-karting at Karting Competición, or splash around at the Western Water Park. You can also try horseback riding and hiking to get outdoors and catch some of the lovely sun. These pursuits, along with all the delights of the beach, should keep you and your family well entertained during your stay.

So if you are looking for a great, cheap, family friendly destination in the Mediterranean you should consider Magaluf. It is undoubtedly a great place to party – yet you can cut this part out and instead concentrate on the many family oriented facilities available.

Fiesta Sahara (now the Fresh Sahara) [Review]

Having stayed at these apartments in past (2000,2001, 2002), I was able to enjoy the wonders of Magaluf in what is one of thee most popular apartments, aimed at a young audience, with bookings being taken, typically from Thomsons and their associated partners.

The complex is split into two blocks, both identical in terms of there room layout and erected over 5 floors. Looking at the blocks from the main entrance there is a small parade of amusement and vending machines from which there is a clear link between the reception and the on site supermercado (crudely still have the ‘oasis’ logo above it from when the hotel was called Oasis Sahara(!)). This as you would expect for an apartment block offers guests the chance to purchase food, drink, cigarettes, gifts and various utensils and homeware to make your stay at the apartments whatever you want it to be.

The range is fairly extensive owing to its size and if your unfamiliar with magaluf, the prices charged are fair and reasonable, with variety of most ‘UK’ branded tins, cereals and drinks quite good. In the hotter months it is advisable to consider the hassle factor of buying groceries from further afield as you have to carry them for ‘miles’ in the heat, which isn’t ideallic, or indeed what holidays are all about.

Moving onto the reception facility, with a light and airy feel there is a sloping Egyptian style counter as you arrive with comfy sofas, internet and phone areas complete with an exit to the pool environment. On our experience of the check in, it was relatively swift and every time the representative was informative and helpful in advising of the facilities of the hotel. Of interest to guests checking in, as usual for holiday aboard, is the safety deposit box, this retailed at 20E per week, with a 10E deposit. Worth considering for storing valuables. Whilst we never seen any evidence of break ins, cleaners doing the off with your iPod, it’s a valuable bit of kit and provides more ‘peace of mind’ than not having it, Iv always felt that way about it anyway.

The check in aside, 2 keys are issued for utilisation and if your on a odd number your apartment will be on the left hand side (same side as reception) and even numbers are located on the supermarket side. As it so happens, our rooms were 401, 443 and 405 for the times we stayed, so we always had a pool view on the ‘odd’ side and were always on the 4th floor. It is worth noting, and don’t ask why, but there is no ‘403’ or indeed any ‘*03’ on any floor, don’t know the reason for this. Having became friendly with our neighbours over the holidays the view from the non pool side is not that great, you look onto other apartments, or the main road. However it just depends how anal you are about viewing the pool.

On the pool topic, it is easily one of the best in magaluf. Large, spacious and with plenty of room for a carry on or to just relax and read your book there is ample space for all. The only downside is that unless your down before 12-1pm then you may struggle to get a sunlounger, however the Restaurant on site does offer some areas for seating, but only if your buying a breakfast or burger.

On  the subject of eating, there is a the on site facility, which is good for lights snacks, juice, crisps and the like during the day. I wouldn’t class it as the pinnacle of fine dining however and we always ate elsewhere at night for dinners as we felt it was a good idea to mix up the venues for eating on the holiday and didn’t feel that the on site catering was worthy for an evening meal. Variety was ample though, covering all british favourites from Pizza, Burgers, Toasties and the like.

If on the other hand your more a budding Gordon Ramsay and fancying exercising your skills in the kitchen there is a decent selection of utensils to do this. Space is pretty limited, so that huge 3 courser you had in mind probably is best abandoned. Typically the kitchens had a few pots, bowls, jugs (good for alcoholic cocktails), plates, saucers, knifes and forks. So idea for a bit of French toast, spaghetti and small snack orientated dishes and little else. We did understand that any breakages were being taken seriously by staff on site, so probably best being careful when getting your 5th pint of vodka red bull in the apartment and accidentally dropping the glass. Way of avoiding this is of course to spend a few quid on disposable numbers.

Outwith the complex there is a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants on ‘Carrer Blanc’ which is the street on which the hotels entrance is sitting. Of particular note, we would recommend Bar Moon, which is diagionally opposite the entrance, it offers a lot of dishes and the menu choices go over 200 items and the owner, Gregorio, is a very charming and hospitable chap, who offers a good spot of nosh and drinks prior to going out.

Opposite this is a Spar Supermercado, which we found to be good value and handy for morning baguettes in the apartments. Wider range of goods compared to the ‘Oasis’ on site effort. Elsewhere on the street, highlights include Burger King on the corner, if you’re a burger fan, Hang Zu Chinese, doing a buffet for 9E in the evenings and a few other restaurants and the legendary ‘Benny Hills’ amusement arcade and bar.

Venue is ideal, round the corner from BCM, 5-10mins to the strip and the beach. Cant complain in that respect.

Overall it’s the perfect venue for an enjoyable young persons holiday. Thoroughly recommended and we had a cracking time each year we went.

Vista Nova Hotel [Review]

Rating: ★★★★☆

Right, firstly a confession.

I spent the entire stay at the Vista Nova hotel cursing that big hill that leads up to it. You know the one; it starts between Poco Loco’s and the green bank; (Banca March?) they’ve put steps on it now, with banister rails and everything, but when we stayed there, the hill was pretty much a dirt track, so you couldn’t even crawl up it. So, walking up it, PROPERLY knackered you out.

But that’s nothing – last year, we stayed at the Torrenova Playa. Now THAT’S a bloody hill. I swear blind I lost a stone when I stayed there, so in many ways, I wish I’d stayed there a month.

So back to the Vista Nova, then, where the hill leading up to it is, when compared to the other one, like walking up the stairs at home. The other hill makes you realise just what a good location the Vista Nova is in.

My review is probably slightly out of date because we stayed there about three or four years ago now, but unless they’ve moved a few walls or taken some floors down or replaced the lift with some parachute packs, then not much will have changed.

Now seeing as this is a hotel, and not an apartment block, we could only get two in a room. There were six of us, so that meant having three rooms – great if you’re intent on bringing a bird back every night because it’s only one mate that you have to foist on someone else, but it’s not so good for facilitating lads’ camaraderie, not helped by the fact that our party’s rooms were all on different floors.

The rooms are a bit small as well, which is OK for us lads, because ‘getting ready’ consists of a shower and a squirt of Lynx, but for the girlies, it might get a bit, er, intimate. Well, I presume so – obviously I can’t be sure, so if any girls want to invite me to do an observant review on their endeavours to get ready in this rather confined space, for the purpose of any updates to this review then feel free to PM me, and I’ll visit you. Ahem.

On the upside, there was a telly, and air conditioning, the latter of which in my opinion is an absolute must in a place like Magaluf. The views are nothing to write home for, unless you like looking at Poco Locos’ roof or a massive satellite dish, but some rooms overlook the pool.

And it has to be said, the pool area is rather good – the pool itself is a good size, there are plenty of loungers, a bar, and direct access to the restaurant. You can stay half or full board, and I presume you could, if you wanted to, stay ‘room only’. Half board is ample though, but my advice would be to treat ‘breakfast’ like you would the kebab shop after your night out, as they really do serve at proper breakfast time, between 7 and 10am, as opposed to Magaluf breakfast time.

My mates did exactly that – and got a right good scran upon returning from Boomerang’s. There they were, staggering all over the place and stinking of ale, whilst mums and dads are getting their kids’ breakfasts ready.

And this can be a bone of contention for some. Personally, we were OK with having families around, but I’m not convinced that the families were OK with us – a bunch of six 30-ish blokes chucking a rugby ball around whilst supping ale and swearing. That said, we made friends with a few families – maybe that just illustrates the type of family that likes to take their holidays in central Magaluf?

Either way, it’s very well located for pretty much everything including a supermarket, which is located opposite the cul-de-sac where the main entrance to the hotel is. You certainly can’t moan about the distance from the beach, or from the bars and restaurants. The hotel is fairly prominent, and yet there is little noise intrusion from the action that is so close by.

Would I stay there again? Bloody right, I would. We didn’t pay silly money for it, it wasn’t overly noisy, the food was adequate, and it was close to everything.

The hill? Pah – what hill?

Magaluf Playa Apartments [Review]

Rating: ★★★★☆

Arrived 1pm on the Wednesday afternoon, Nice and hot without a cloud in the sky

Hotel i’ve been to before, although its now changed hands and there’s a new lady called Ann who is very nice and polite, She was very helpful getting us all on the same floor and next to each other, her son (I believe it is) Toni was also great to talk to about football. There’s LOADS of VERY useful info on the Notice boards letting you know what’s closed and what’s not, taxis info etc etc.. A very nice touch!

Room: Nice and basic, we had 2 balcony’s and a nice room very clean and tidy, maids came 3 times in our stay! Changed towels made beds and cleaned out all rubbish! We left valuables about and they weren’t even moved! Which is very good! Showers were hot all day along! No waiting for hot water!

Pool Side: Clean and tidy, more than enough sun bed thingys! And seats, pool was nice and refreshing also! Tom browns right next to it for a drink, €5 – 2x bottled Beer.

Kensington Apartments [Review]

Rating: ★★★☆☆
Kensington apartments are spotless, cheap, clean and very central being located at the top of the strip just around the corner. The nearest beach is just 50 metres away. The apartments are also situated above a supermarket that sells everything you could possibly need.
The owners are Spanish and speak little English but they are very friendly and helpful once you manage to communicate with them! They do live in the apartments and tolerate a lot as we were quite rowdy in the early hours of the morning being 10 of us, all arriving home at different times and nothing was ever said to us.
We stayed for 5 nights and our rooms were cleaned once which wasn’t too bad. There is a safe deposit box which was 10 euros per room and we never had any security problems regarding room and box.The little kitchen has all the basic things you usually get i.e. kettle, plates, cups, utensils etc.
If I had to mention a downside it would be that being located above the supermarket it does get a little noisy around 7am with deliveries which doesn’t help when you arrive home at 6am. Also there is no air con for the height of summer but at the prices they charge you pay for what you get.
I would definitely recommend these apartments if you are looking for somewhere clean, cheap and just somewhere to rest your head between partying.

Florida Hotel [Review]

Rating: ★★★★☆

Hotel Florida is situated very close to all the bars and clubs, but you have to walk up and down the big hill every day which gets can get quite annoying. The hotel had a lot of Spanish and Swiss people staying there. The hotel was posh, food was nice and if you want to go for a lads holiday l fully recommend Magaluf!
