The Magaluf Uncovered™ Interview
with Judge Jules by NeilC
MU -
Judge Jules, thanks for spending sometime with us and especially just
as your about to do your set here in Fusion.
We just have a range of questions to give our website users more of
an insight into you the person and why you have decided to play here
in Magaluf.
MU -
So...Why Magaluf?
JJ -
Well I have only ever played 2 resorts in Mallorca, Palma and Magaluf,
but Palma was years ago. I guess it's really where the bookings have
been. Sorry the answer isn't any more exciting.
MU -
What's the impression of the crowd out here that are coming to see
you?
JJ -
Well this is only my second Gig this year, having moved to Fusion
having done BCM an awful lot of times. I think smaller clubs, even
though we are in quite a commercial strip, inevitably attracts people
who are slightly more musically orientated. The one thing I know from
my own website and the 500 odd emails I get a week, is the amount
of people that assume, "I am a clubber.. Ergo..I go to Ibiza"
a hell of a lot of clubbers come to Mallorca and therefore its important
to play here. Its not like I get loads of emails from people who say
I am going to Corfu, Rhodes or Tenerife, but I do get an awful lot
of emails that say I am going to see you at Ibiza and some though
not as many saying I am looking forward to seeing you in Mallorca.,
hence its really important to be here.
MU -
So what's the big tune for the summer?
JJ -
Some seasons are long and in the case of Ibiza and Mallorca its sort
of 15 weeks long and so you can only really judge tunes month to month,
so start of season to about Mid July, Mid July to roughly Mid August
and then Mid August to the end of the season and were still in that
first phase and without a doubt its Benni Benassi - Satisfaction,
that's the big tune.
MU -
In terms of the superstar DJ lifestyle is it all glam? Or is it actually
hard work?
JJ -
Well it depends what you consider hard word, I mean superficially
travelling to lots of places and getting on lots of flights is glamorous,
but if you take 300 flights a year, roughly a flight every day 1.2.
Days is extremely f***in tiring, and i love my job and I wouldn't
give it up for anything, but there is an awful lot of downtime, like
checking in and waiting at airports, the flights, and the two hours
that you end up DJ'ing in clubs is fantastic, and I so I am satisfied
in then end, but its not all glamorous at all, but I am not moaning
at all, its just that its very easy to say superficially that's its
just dancing in front of a load of girls, but its really not as straight
forward as that.
MU -
What would you change about Magaluf if you could change anything as
a resort?
JJ -
Well I can analyse anything at this time of the morning to a certain
degree as we discussed earlier, in that I have been to a number of
considered British resorts in the last couple of days, Kavos in Corfu,
Faliraki in Rhodes, then I went to Ibiza to here, Monday I'm going
to Benidorm and Thursday I am going to Tenerife, therefore those are
are the main resorts the Brits are going to, I guess even when I was
18 the garishness of the neon was not THAT appealing and the fact
that English people want to fraternise with each other, and the fact
that some, although I really think its changing, want England in Sun
as opposed to wanting Spain, and that mentality which is the British
Island mentality, whilst I dont find distasteful, is the only thing
I would possibly like to change. I guess when your younger its more
unlikely that you have been anywhere else abroad and so your really
sort of dipping your fingers into foreign culture and umm which is
kinda why I like Ibiza, because while it is a smaller Island, you
can sort of go elsewhere, whilst you can do the clubbing bit in San
Antonio,, but you have Ibiza Town which is very cosmopolitan..erm..whereas
in the case of Magaluf, its quite British and you could almost live
a 7 day or 14 day contained holiday surrounded by British and not
go beyond that and it would be difficult not to experience something
more Spanish, but I guess that's what people want, but I do sense
that changing, as I see less football shirts here, I see less hoardings
outside bars or clubs saying what drinks cost in £'s for a pint,
that sort of thing. Its culture and acclimatisation, its a lot of
people would be inclined to experience more of what a foreign culture
is about as opposed to just getting a Sun Tan or turn Lobster coloured,
as time goes on....but at the same time, I'm not knocking it...I mean
I love coming here, and I love playing here, and I am fortunate enough
that I get enough offers of work that I I don't just have to anywhere,
regardless of my how much I like or dislike it.
MU -
If you could open your own club anywhere in the world, where would
it be and why?
JJ -
It would be Ibiza, but it would be a small club, which didn't charge
any money on the door, but was really a club for me and my mates,
I don't want to come to Mallorca and talk about Ibiza, but its hard
not to as I've got two houses there, I speak near fluent Spanish and
ultimately its my plan to move there, but I will always want to come
to Mallorca a lot. Mallorca and Ibiza are the two places I love most.
MU -
What's the worst thing about your job?
JJ -
Being away from my Son and my Wife, although my wife is able to travel
with me a lot more and so she can travel, but my son is only turned
4, and so there are not as many times when he can travel with us.
MU -
Who do you personally rate as one of the best up and coming DJ's?
JJ -
Eddie Halliwell , because he is technically gifted well and truly
beyond my level.
OK....Some quick fire questions now,
just one word answers to give people a real insight into your own
personal tastes and choice......What's better?
MU -
Wine or Beer?
JJ -
Wine
MU -
Indian or Chinese?
JJ -
Thai
MU -
UK or US?
JJ -
We speak the same language but that's where similarities end.
MU -
Burger or Kebab?
JJ -
Kebab
MU -
Girls in trainers or high heels?
JJ -
Depends on the trainers..hehehe
MU -
Football or Rugby?
JJ -
Football by a stratosphere
MU -
Big Brother or Fame Accademy?
JJ -
Well Fame Academy is filmed about 200 yards from my house and it causes
an awful lot of shitty traffic! (much laughter from those around)
and I hate Big Brother so I don't quite know which. So neither!
MU -
Vinyl or CD?
JJ -
Er...33% CD 66% Vinyl
MU -
Porsche or Ferrari?
JJ -
Well I have had both and I have now changed to a Range Rover!
MU -
Money or Lifestyle?
JJ -
I guess intertwined although I guess in the real world you wouldn't
want them to be.
MU -
Hotel or Appartment?
JJ -
Apartment
MU -
Blondes or Brunettes?
JJ -
Er my wife has blonde and brunette in the last month, so er.. :)
MU -
Bungee or Sky Dive?
JJ -
Erm..terra firma...
OK thanks for that..a few more main
questions now.....
MU -
What's your most prized vinyl?
JJ -
We recently had a flood at the studio where I keep my vinyl, and interesting
moral dilemma in that many of the sleeves were damaged, but with a
little cleaning the vinyl will remain the same. I actually felt ....lets
say....."Pillaged!" and it was almost like a grounding experience,
it made me realise that the physical concept of the sleeve and what
it looks like is almost as important as the music itself. It's not
really an answer to the question, but the best I can do I suppose.
MU -
What's the tune you would most like to remix?
JJ -
Ermmm well one of them I am doing at the moment, although its hard
when your out in the Balearics for a few months, Is Brainbug by Nightmare,
the Italians have commissioned me to do that.
MU -
Who is your favourite vocalist of all time?
JJ -
Paul Weller (MU - Why?) cause he was my teenage hero.
MU -
What do you do to relax?
JJ -
Play with my son, or go for a run, its one of the therapeutic things
you can do, although you feel crap for about half an hour after, you
do get a sort of afterglow of pure endorphins for about 2 hours afterwards.
MU -
A big question from some from the site, is How old are you? Cause
there is a bit of a myth as to how old you really are?
JJ -
Ermmmmmm...I normally only...unlike well a lot of certain other key
name DJ's who are extremely economical with the truth... I normally
only shave one year off...so we'll call it 35!! ( Much laughter!)
MU -
If you could be invisible for a day, where would you go?
JJ -
Er........the changing room at my Gym probably..the ladies of course!!....no
no no...wait...the changing room at a fashion show!!...( much more
laughing!)
MU -
Do you have one thing left in ya life, that you haven't done yet?
JJ -
Ermm..........................Go to India.....well my wife comes from
a very Indian area, even though she is not Indian...and Indians and
a certain number of other ethnic groups are so stable and so successful
and accepted in British society, because they come from such a strong
family background, I just have so much respect for them and not just
Indians but Pakistani society as well......god I could go off on a
real tangent here!!....but its almost as if the massive furore that
surrounds asylum seekers at the moment has sort of made them new villains
in the eyes of the sort of redneck echelons of British society and
its as if the Afro Caribbean and the Asian imigrants of the 50's,
60's and to a certain degree 70's are now fully accepted as an integrated
part of British society at the expense of all this shit that goes
on about all these asylum seekers, and even though there are a load
and nobody can deny,..bogus asylum seekers, there are a hell of a
lot of genuine people who seeking asylum that have been persecuted
in their own country and now they are utter scapegoats for British
society for the wrong reasons...but if there is any upside to that
downside is that those immigrants of 25 - 40 years ago are now a strong
and integral part of British Society and no one really questions them.....or
their.....legitimacy as being British and if you look at one group
that are incredibly impressive, then the Indians have achieved enormous
success and statistically if you at how they do in schools and colleges
their results are just better than sort of....white Anglo Saxons I
was gonna say, but white people in general. Its just that every Indian
I meet, and you don't to meet many in clubs cause they are not loony
enough to go, but they are the nicest, most grounded, sensible people
you could possibly encounter, it sounds like, almost a bit Margaret
Thatcher like to talk about the importance of family values, but the
Indians really do believe in it and the end results show. (DJ Fubar
interjects - Its true, I have never met an Indian that did not want
to work or do their very best...they really are great people, ....
I went out with an Indian girl once....) JJ - Bastaad! (much laughter)
OK last question......
MU -
If you could give one piece of advice to Brits on holiday, what would
it be?
JJ -
Its difficult...cause you cant give a one size fits all bit of advice
due to difference between a 70 year old holiday maker and an 18 year
old.... but... really.. Go beyond the confines of English orientated
holidayville, because personalising this for Mallorca, Mallorca is
a very beautiful Island, its got so many fantastic things to offer,
its millionaires enclaves, its got mountains, its got the old railway
that trundles along.....and apart from Ibiza which captured my heart
as it was my first booking as a DJ, Mallorca is the only other place
where I would happily live. But also really if people can experience
different cuisine and step outside the realms of standard Brits on
holiday, set yourself and agenda, in Ibiza so many people go there
and end up needing a holiday when they get back, pace yourselves,
have one night on, one night off, go out till 6am one day then go
to bed earlier the next and have a great day at the beach or something.
Its very hard being a sort of 35 year old, with a few quid to suggest
to someone who is just out with a much smaller holiday budget to erm
get in a taxi and wander or hire a car, but so many people who come
to Magaluf are groups of friends and whilst many car hire companies
will say you have to be 21, many will to you if you are 18 and have
your driving licence with you, its gonna cost hardly anything, like
50 euros for the day, its nothing, but get out there and see a bit........god
now I am going to be responsible for loads of crashes!..people driving
on the wrong side of the road!...(much laughter from all in the room)
I firmly believe that over the course of the next 10 years as we were
saying earlier, I have definitely spotted a shift, I think that there
is definitely a shift and people not just going away with an Island
mentality now, where they wanna wear football shirts, where they wanna
basically...all they want is the UK with sun, they want the menus
in English, they want English cuisine, they wanna go out and see English....even
roping myself into this equation, they wanna see English DJ's, but
slowly we are becoming more European, and that at the end of the day
is a good thing.
MU-
Well Jules, its been a pleasure and thanks for your time, and now
its time for you to go do your set! Me to hit the bar! and someone
the task of typing this Interview out!!!! Many Thanks.
